Osaka Travel Guide
Osaka is the third largest city in Japan, with a population of over 2.5 million people in its greater metropolitan area. It is the central metropolis of the Kansai region and the largest of the Osaka–Kobe–Kyoto trio.
Veiled much with a commercial-centric city touch, you may as well start from picking up the lively intonation of Osaka dialect, heard from the people as you ride on the escalators standing on the right, instead of the left in Tokyo; then discovering the contrast of popular food to eastern Japan, as you look for places to lunch. The deeper you get inside, and at the end of your stay, it is not completely impossible that you may have compiled your own original list of reasons covering from history, culture, sports, to business.
Osaka dates back to the Asuka and Nara periods. Under the name Naniwa, it was briefly the capital of Japan 645-655, 661-667 and finally 744-745 AD. Even after the capital was moved elsewhere, Osaka continued to play an important role as a hub for land, sea and river-canal transportation. (See “808 Bridges” infobox.) During the Tokugawa era, while Edo (now Tokyo) served as the austere seat of military power and Kyoto was the home of the Imperial court and its courtiers, Osaka served as “the Nation’s Kitchen”, the collection and distribution point for rice, the most important measure of wealth. Hence it was also the city where merchants made and lost fortunes and cheerfully ignored repeated warnings from the shogunate to reduce their conspicuous consumption.
Osaka is located in the humid subtropical climate zone, with four distinct seasons. Its winters are generally mild, with January being the coldest month having an average high of 9.3 °C (49 °F). The city rarely sees snowfall during the winter. Spring in Osaka starts off mild, but ends up being hot and humid. It also tends to be Osaka‘s wettest season, with the tsuyu — the rainy season — occurring between early June (average:Jun.7) to late July (average:Jul.21). Summers are very hot and humid. In August, the hottest month, the average daily high temperature reaches 33.5 °C (92 °F), while average nighttime low temperatures typically hover around 25.5 °C (78 °F). Fall in Osaka sees a cooling trend, with the early part of the season resembling summer while the latter part of fall resembles winter. Precipitation is abundant, with winter being the driest season, while monthly rainfall peaks in June with the “tsuyu” rainy season, which typically ends in mid to late July. From late July through the end of August, summer’s heat and humidity peaks, and rainfall decreases some. Osaka experiences a second rainy period in September and early October, when tropical weather systems, including typhoons, coming from the south or southwest are possible.
“Osaka” can mean either the larger Osaka prefecture, covered in a separate guide, or central Osaka city, the topic of this guide. The city is administratively divided into 24 wards, but in common usage the following divisions are more useful:
- Kita – The newer center of the city, including the Kita ward. Umeda is the main terminal. Department stores, theaters and boutiques are clustered around JR Osaka Station and Umeda Station, which serves several city and private railways
- Minami – The traditional commercial and cultural center, composed of the Chuo and Naniwa wards. Namba is the main railway station, and the surrounding area has the department store and showy shopping. Shinsaibashi and Horie is the fashion area. Dotonbori is the best place to go for a bite to eat.Semba straddles the line between Kita and Minami, and contains the business districts of Yodoyabashi, Doujima and Hommachi; and the financial district of Kitahama.
- Tennoji – Generally means the area around JR Tennōji Station, Abeno and Tennoji subway stations and Kintetsu rail lines, located at the south end of Tennōji ward. The ward was named after the historical Shitennoji temple. Tennōji Park and Zoo are in the area, and so is the Tsūtenkaku Tower. To the west of Tennōji is Shinsekai, which was an amusement area in the past and has now become quite seedy.
- Osaka castle – Osaka Castle is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Japan. Kyōbashi is northeast of Osaka Castle, home to Osaka Business Park (OBP).
- North – Covering the area north of Osaka. Includes Shin-Osaka and Juso.
- East – The eastern suburbs of Osaka.
- South – The southern suburbs of Osaka containing various districts, which has the Sumiyoshi-Taisya Grand Shrine.
- Bay Area – Huge amusement area with many gigantic facilities.
Best time to visit Osaka
Osaka‘s peak travel periods are Mar, May (especially Golden Week, which begins in late Apr), Aug, and Nov–Dec. The subtropical climate causes mild winters, humid summers and a May–Jul rainy season. Widely attended events include various cherry-blossom festivals (Apr) and the popular, longstanding Tenjin Festival (Jul), known for its music and puppetry performances, portable shrine parade, evening procession of boats and closing hand-clapping ceremony.
