South Korea Travel Guide
Known as the “Land of the Morning Calm”, Korea has for a long time served as a cultural bridge between its neighbors, China and Japan. South Korea has emerged from the shadows of its turbulent past and cemented its place as one of the world’s major economic powers. Since the turn of the 21st century, South Korean culture has become enormously popular all over East Asia and lying to the east of the Asian mainland, and this has made it a very popular tourist destination.
South Korea, an East Asian nation on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, shares one of the world’s most heavily militarized borders with North Korea. It’s equally known for its green, hilly countryside dotted with cherry trees and centuries-old Buddhist temples, plus its coastal fishing villages, sub-tropical islands and high-tech cities such as Seoul, the capital.
South Korea is a highly developed country and a high-income economy, with a “very high” Human Development Index, ranking 22nd in the world. The country is considered a regional power and is the world’s 11th largest economy by nominal GDP and the 12th largest by PPP as of 2010. South Korea is a global leader in the industrial and technological sectors, being the world’s 5th largest exporter and 8th largest importer. Its export-driven economy primarily focuses production on electronics, automobiles, ships, machinery, petrochemicals and robotics. South Korea is a member of the ASEAN Plus mechanism, the United Nations, Uniting for Consensus, G20, the WTO and OECD and is a founding member of APEC and the East Asia Summit.
Seoul’s attractions include futuristic Dongdaemun Design Plaza, a curving convention hall; Gyeongbokgung Palace, which once had more than 7,000 rooms; the ritzy Gangnam neighborhood; and Lotte World, an indoor-outdoor amusement park. To the north lies the DMZ buffer zone where visitors can peer into North Korea. In the south, the city of Busan is known for the high-rise-lined Haeundae Beach and mountainside Beomeosa Temple. The city of Gyeongju features royal tombs and an observatory from the Silla dynasty. Jeju Island is a honeymoon destination of beaches, waterfalls, volcanic craters and lava caves.
